Set up age-restricted categories and ID prompts

Flag tobacco, vapes, alcohol and lottery so the register asks for ID, checks the date of birth and logs every check.

Updated 2026-10-17

Once a category is flagged, every item in it, including new ones, triggers the ID prompt.

Flag a category

  1. Go to Products → Categories and edit, for example, Cigarettes.
  2. Turn on Age restricted and enter the minimum age (21 for tobacco and vapes in the US under federal law).
  3. Repeat for vapes, cigars, smokeless, beer, wine, spirits and lottery (your state’s lottery age).

Sale-hour limits (alcohol)

If your state limits alcohol sale hours, set the allowed hours per day on the alcohol categories. Outside them the register refuses the item.

Blocked items

Mark individual SKUs you are not allowed to sell (for example flavoured vapes where banned) as not for sale.

Scanner

A 2D imager scanner reads the barcode on the back of US and Canadian licences and fills the date of birth. Without one, cashiers type the date from the ID.

The log

Every check (passed, refused, overridden) is stored with time, register and cashier. Find it under Reports → Age checks. The customer’s name, address and licence number are not stored.

This is general setup help, not legal advice. Your state and local licences decide the rules.
