Convenience store POS types compared
| Type | Typical cost | Fits | Where it hurts a c-store |
|---|---|---|---|
| Legacy register / ECR | Low monthly, high upfront | Rings sales, little else | No reports you can trust, no ID log, hardware fails, support ends |
| Generalist POS app | Free to mid | Easy for any small shop | Lottery, scan data and fuel are not core; processing often tied in |
| Enterprise c-store suite | Quote, often high | Chains with back-office staff | Contracts, installers, built for 50+ stores |
| GetConvenienceStorePOS | Published, from Counter plan | Independent stores and small chains | Fuel depends on your controller: ask on demo |

Comparison questions
Which type of POS is best for a convenience store?
For an independent store or small chain, a convenience-store edition of a cloud POS is usually best: it has lottery, ID prompts, scan data and shift close built in, without the cost and contracts of an enterprise suite. Generalist apps suit shops without lottery or fuel. Legacy registers only make sense if you need nothing but a cash total.
Are these comparisons fair?
We only state what competitors publish or what independent aggregators report, dated 2026-10-17. Where we could not confirm something, we say "check". Each page lists where the competitor is strong. Tell us if anything is out of date.
Why not compare with enterprise c-store vendors by name?
Their pricing is quote-only and depends on your store count, so a published comparison would be guesswork. Ask them for a total monthly cost, then use our savings calculator.
Is a cloud POS reliable enough for a 24-hour store?
Yes, with a backup internet connection such as a phone hotspot. The POS runs in a browser on hardware you control, and your data is backed up off-site.
What matters most when comparing?
Total monthly cost including card processing, the c-store features you actually use (lottery, scan data, fuel, ID log), contract length, whether your staff can use it in their language, and how easy it is to leave.
