The counter kit, piece by piece

What each piece must do, what to look for, and brand names stores often already own. Brand names are for reference; we are not affiliated with them.

Screen: PC, tablet or iPad

Must: A current browser (Chrome or Edge recommended), a stable internet connection, 10 inches or more.

A touchscreen PC or a 10–13 inch Android tablet on a stand is the c-store sweet spot. Second screen for the customer display is optional.

  • Windows touchscreen PCs
  • Android tablets
  • iPad

Barcode scanner

Must: USB or Bluetooth scanner that types like a keyboard (HID mode).

Choose a 2D imager: it reads phone screens and the barcode on the back of a driver's licence for age checks.

  • Zebra
  • Honeywell
  • Datalogic

Receipt printer

Must: 80 mm thermal printer with USB, network or Bluetooth.

Pick one with a cash drawer port (RJ11/RJ12) so the drawer opens when the sale is paid.

  • Epson
  • Star Micronics
  • Bixolon

Cash drawer

Must: Printer-driven drawer (connects to the receipt printer).

Five note, five coin slots fits US notes; a deeper till helps for AED and PKR notes.

  • APG
  • Star Micronics

Label printer

Must: Thermal label printer for shelf and barcode labels.

Useful for in-store items without a manufacturer barcode, like hot food or repacked goods.

  • Zebra
  • Brother
  • TSC

Scale (optional)

Must: Label-printing scale for weighed items.

Most c-stores do not need one. Delis and stores with loose produce do.

  • Label-printing retail scales

Card terminal

Must: Your processor's terminal. We do not supply or process card payments.

The POS records the card payment; the terminal and processing stay with your processor or bank.

  • Your processor's terminal

Hardware questions

What hardware does a convenience store POS need?

A convenience store POS needs a screen (a Windows PC, Android tablet or iPad with a browser), a barcode scanner, an 80 mm thermal receipt printer, a cash drawer that opens from the printer, and your card processor's terminal. A label printer, a customer display and a scale are optional.

Do you sell hardware?

No. We do not sell or lease hardware, so there is nothing to lock you in. Use what you have, or buy from any reseller; this guide tells you what to look for.

Will my current scanner work?

Most likely. Any scanner that acts like a keyboard (HID mode) works, which covers most USB and Bluetooth scanners sold for retail.

Which scanner reads driver's licences?

A 2D imager scanner that reads PDF417 barcodes. Most current 2D retail scanners do. A 1D laser scanner will not.

Does the cash drawer open automatically?

Yes, when it is connected to the receipt printer's drawer port and the printer is set up in the POS. The drawer opens on cash payments and on a no-sale with a manager PIN.

Can I use an iPad?

Yes, in the browser. For a busy counter, a touchscreen PC or Android tablet gives you more printer and scanner options.

Which card terminals work?

The POS records payments made on your processor's terminal. Ask on your demo about connecting your specific terminal so the amount is sent automatically.

What if the internet goes down?

Keep a backup connection, such as a phone hotspot, for the register. We recommend it for every store.
