How does lottery tracking on a POS work?
Lottery tracking on a POS records the three things the state terminal cannot tell you by cashier: which scratch-off tickets left each bin, which were rung up, and which winners were paid from the drawer. Counting bins at every shift change and comparing the day with the terminal report turns a monthly lottery shortage into a same-day conversation.
Lottery is high volume and low margin, and shortages hide in it: a book activated but never logged, a ticket handed over without being rung, a payout that went into a pocket. The state's numbers will be right. The question is whether yours are.
A lottery day, from book to settlement
The routine that keeps the weekly invoice from surprising you.
- Morningbooks
Activate new scratch-off books
When a pack arrives, record the game, book number and ticket count against a bin. The POS knows what each bin should hold before a single ticket is sold.
- All daysales
Ring lottery like any other item
Scratch-offs scan or sit on a quick key per price point. Draw-game sales from your state terminal are entered as a total per shift, so they land in the same report as the coffee and the fuel.
- On winpayouts
Log every payout at the counter
A cashier pays a winner up to your store's limit and logs it as a lottery payout, which takes cash out of the drawer on the record. Bigger prizes go to the lottery office as your state requires.
- Shift endcount
Count the bins, not the till
Enter the next ticket number showing in each bin. The POS works out tickets sold per bin and compares it with what was rung. A gap shows up on this shift, against this cashier.
- Dailysettle
Settle against the terminal report
Put the state terminal's daily numbers (sales, cashes, net) next to the POS totals. Differences are listed line by line, so you fix them today instead of at the weekly invoice.
Bin count example: where a shortage shows up
Every bin, every shift. The POS does the subtraction; the cashier only types the next ticket number.
| Bin | Ticket price | Start no. | End no. | Sold (by count) | Rung on POS | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1 | 012 | 031 | 19 | 19 | 0 |
| 2 | 2 | 044 | 052 | 8 | 8 | 0 |
| 3 | 5 | 007 | 019 | 12 | 11 | 1 ticket |
| 4 | 10 | 020 | 024 | 4 | 4 | 0 |
Example figures. Ticket prices and book sizes are whatever your state lottery sells; you set them per game.
Payout limits
Set the most a cashier can pay from the drawer. Above it, the POS tells them to send the customer to the lottery office or a manager.
Separate lottery drawer
Prefer lottery cash apart from the till? Open a second register for lottery and close it on its own.
Commission view
Record your state's rates per game type and see estimated commission next to sales and cashes.
What it does not do
It does not replace or talk to the state's terminal on its own, and it does not sell draw-game tickets. The terminal stays the state's; the POS keeps your books.
US only
Lottery tracking is built around US state lotteries. Stores in the UAE and Pakistan do not see it. What changes per country.

Lottery questions
What owners ask before they move their lottery off the notebook.
Can a POS track lottery sales?
Yes. The POS tracks scratch-off sales by game and bin, draw-game totals per shift, and payouts, and lines them up against your state lottery terminal report. The lottery terminal itself stays the state's; the POS keeps your side of the books.
Does it connect directly to the state lottery terminal?
The state lottery terminal is supplied and controlled by your state lottery. The POS works alongside it: you enter or import the terminal's daily report, and the POS reconciles it against what your cashiers rang and paid out. Ask on your demo about your state.
How do I find a missing scratch-off ticket?
Count each bin at shift change by entering the next ticket number. The POS calculates tickets sold per bin and flags any bin where tickets left the bin without being rung. Because counts happen per shift, you know which shift and cashier to talk to.
Can cashiers pay out winning tickets from the drawer?
Yes, up to the limit you set and your state allows. Each payout is recorded with the game, amount, time and cashier, and reduces the expected cash in the drawer, so the shift close stays right.
What is lottery settlement?
Lottery settlement is comparing what your store sold and paid out with what the state lottery says you owe for the period, usually weekly. The POS does a daily mini-settlement so the weekly one has no surprises.
Is lottery age-checked?
You can flag lottery items with your state's minimum age, which is 18 in most states and higher in a few. The register prompts for ID like it does for tobacco.
Does lottery work in the UAE or Pakistan?
No. Lottery tracking is built for US state lotteries. It is switched off for stores in the UAE and Pakistan.
Can I see lottery commission?
You can record your state's commission rates per game type and see estimated commission on sales and cashes in the report. Your state's settlement remains the final figure.
Which plan includes lottery?
Lottery sales and payouts are in every US plan. Bin counts and daily settlement reports are in Full Shift and Multi-Store, which is where most lottery stores land.
Can I keep lottery cash separate?
Many stores run lottery from the same drawer; some keep a separate lottery drawer. You can set up a second cash register for lottery and close it on its own.
Stop counting lottery in a notebook
Set up your bins in the trial, count one shift, and see the difference report the same night.
