Open and close a register (shift close)

Open a shift with a counted float, record safe drops and payouts, and close with a blind count by denomination.

Updated 2026-10-17

Open

  1. The cashier logs in with their PIN on the register.
  2. They count the starting cash by denomination and enter it. The register is now open in their name.

During the shift

  • Safe drop: when the drawer holds more than your limit, choose Safe drop, enter the amount, put the cash in the safe.
  • Payouts: lottery winners, cash paid to a vendor or a refund in cash are logged with a reason.
  • Pay-in: change brought from the safe is logged as a pay-in.

Close

  1. Choose Close register.
  2. Count the cash by denomination. The cashier does not see the expected amount (blind count).
  3. Enter card and other totals if your processor’s terminal is not connected.
  4. Confirm. The POS shows over or short and saves it against the cashier.

Read the report

Owners and managers see every shift under Reports → Register. Look at over/short by cashier across weeks, not one night.

Read the shift close checklist for the routine many stores print for the counter.
